World Partnership Walk 2014
Your Journey Begins Here to Alleviate Global Poverty
On Sunday May 25th, over 30 Associates from Destination Auto Group will lace up their sneakers and join thousands of other participants in Stanley Park for the Annual World Partnership Walk. This is a special year for the Walk as it celebrates its 30th Anniversary, and especially here in Vancouver where the Walk first started.
In 1985, a small team of women got together to raise awareness and funds for alleviating global poverty. With 1,000 participants the inaugural Walk raised $55,000, and has now mushroomed into a National event that attracts tens of thousands of people in 10 cities across Canada. Over the last 30 years, the Walk has raised $82 million for international development programs and initiatives, making it the largest and most successful event of its kind in Canada.
Walk day itself is a wonderful time to spend with family and friends. It takes place at Lumberman's Arch in Stanley Park, and features live entertainment, great food, and a showcasing of the projects carried out by the Aga Khan Foundation internationally. With the money raised by the Walk, 100% goes directly to funding international development projects, which are identified and implemented by local communities, and target areas of greatest need. Projects are focused on long-term sustainable solutions - like revitalizing a rural economy, ensuring clean water and sanitation, strengthening community-based organizations and educating new generations of girls and women. Funds raised by the Walk also help AKFC to leverage additional support from major donors like the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD).
